Day 7 of the Closet Cleanout Challenge - INTIMATES & MISCELLANEOUS
You've made it! You're on the last day of the 7 Day Closet Cleanout
Challenge! You're closet should be looking amazing by now, and today we're just going to finish up the random things we may have missed earlier in the challenge. If you
missed the post that explains what the challenge is, go back and read it HERE.
WHAT TO KEEP VS. WHAT GET RID OF
The
whole point of this challenge is to declutter our closets (and thus,
our lives) so that we can spend less time digging for items, as well as
have a beautiful space filled with items we truly love. Today we'll be
going through our intimates and any other miscellaneous items we still haven't sorted through, like pajamas, and
categorizing each
of them into one of three
categories: KEEP, SELL, OR DONATE. Take a
hard look at each item and ask yourself these questions:
- Would I buy this if I saw it in the store today?
- Have I worn it in the past year?
- Is it still in good shape?
If
you answered "yes" to all three questions, put it in the KEEP pile.
If not, it's time to get rid of it. For the ones you're getting rid of,
if they're
in really good shape (especially like-new items), put them in the SELL pile. If not, they go in the
DONATE pile.
For the SELL pile, you can either sell
these in a garage sale, on Craigslist, to a local consignment store, or
to my personal favorite, ThredUp. I use ThredUp because it's so easy. You just request a free clean out bag from their website, fill it with
your name brand clothing that's in good condition, and mail it back
(free of charge). They will pay you for the clothes they keep and
decide to resell.
For your DONATE pile, bag it up and take it to the charity or shelter of your choice. If donating to a charity, make sure to ask for a receipt so you can deduct it on your taxes. You can find some guidelines for how to value your used clothing here.

HOW TO STORE YOUR INTIMATES
I never put much thought into how I store my bras and underwear. I just threw them in a drawer. But inevitably, the drawer would become a jumbled mess. About a year ago, I read The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up and started using the Kon Mari method to organize my intimates drawer. Check out a demonstration video here! I love this method and finds that it keeps the drawer tidy indefinitely. I use small box lids to keep everything tidy. This is not my drawer because I'd rather not post my underwear on the internet, but you're going for something that looks like this:

Day 6 of the Closet Cleanout Challenge - COATS & JACKETS
It's Day 6 of the 7 Day Closet Cleanout
Challenge! We're on the home stretch toward having a well organized closet full of the items that make us look and feel our best. If you
missed the post that explains what the challenge is and how to
get entered into the giveaway that's taking place at the end of the
week, go back and read it HERE.
Today we'll be cleaning out our coats and jackets. I find this to be one of the easiest days, so hopefully you will too!

HOW TO STORE COATS & JACKETS
No surprises here - I hang my jackets and coats in our hall closet by the garage door. I find it much more convenient than keeping them in my bedroom closet, especially bulky winter coats. The most aesthetically pleasing way to hang coats (or anything, for that matter) is to hang them from shortest to longest. I put the shortest coats on the left-hand side (generally my kids' coats) and work my way to the longest coats on the right-hand side. This also frees up space under the shorter coats, where I added a small shoe rack for the entire family to store their most-often worn shoes.
I'd love to hear how all of you store your coats and jackets - and to see pictures! Don't forgot to post those pictures on Instagram or Facebook with the hashtag #7DayClosetCleanoutChallenge to be entered into a drawing to win a $25 Target gift card!

HOW TO STORE JEWELRY, BELTS, & SCARVES
As I've said throughout this entire process, how you choose to store these items is completely up to you. There's no "right" or "wrong" way to do it. I'll be sharing how I personally store these items in case that helps inspire you. At this very moment, I store my jewelry in a large jewelry box. However, I'm planning on moving my small items, like rings and earrings, to a smaller jewelry box, and then I'm going to be hanging all of my necklaces from hooks in my closet. I'll be storing my bracelets on t-bars like these. My belts are also currently hanging, but I plan to move those onto shelves in little cubbies (see below). Here are my inspiration pictures from Brighton the Day:
I bought this hanger for my scarves about a year ago and really like it, so I'm planning to continue to use that for my scarves. I'll link up other options as well below.

The
whole point of this challenge is to decluter our closets (and thus,
our lives) so that we can spend less time digging for items, as well as
have a beautiful space filled with items we truly love. We're going to follow the exact same process we used when sorting through our tops yesterday. The first step
is to move all of your pants and shorts into one central area of your closet where you
can see them all. Then, go through them one by one and categorize each of them into one of three
categories: KEEP, SELL, OR DONATE. Take a

HOW TO STORE PANTS & SHORTS
You can either hang or fold your pants, depending on personal preference. I hang my dress pants, and fold my jeans and shorts and stack them on a shelf. I hang everything in
my closet on these hangers because in addition to being very slim and space saving, having all of
your hangers match makes everything look so much more organized and
uniform! I color coordinate my pants, the same way I do with my tops.
Just remember, how you organize your closet is a personal decision that should make the most sense to YOU. There's no "right" or "wrong" way to do it!

Day 3 of the Closet Cleanout Challenge - TOPS
Welcome to Day 3 of the 7 Day Closet Cleanout Challenge! If you missed the post that explains what the challenge is and how to
get entered into the giveaway that's taking place at the end of the
week, go back and read it HERE. Today's task is one of the biggest ones we'll have this week. We'll be sorting through all of our tops today. This includes our tank tops, tees, long sleeved tops, sweaters ... everything. Remember, each task is meant to
take around 30 minutes, so if you're getting overwhelmed or have a large
number of items to go through, you can always break this step into
multiple days.

HOW TO STORE TOPS
I like to hang all of my tops, excluding sweaters, which I fold and store on shelves. I hang everything in
my closet on these hangers because in addition to being very slim and space saving, having all of
your hangers match makes everything look so much more organized and
uniform!
I personally like to separate my tops into 4 different "sections" in my closet: tank tops, short sleeves, long sleeves, and sweaters. I've recently added a new category - cardigans - and decided to hang them because my sweater section is getting too full, and, let's be real, cardigans can be hard to fold! Once I have my tops hung in their respective categories, I color coordinate them. I know color coordinating definitely isn't for everyone, but in addition to looking oh-so-organized, it's easier to find things and put outfits together! I even color coordinate my husband's shirts (so they don't ruin the general aesthetic of our shared closet, of course) but he may not appreciate it quite as much as I do.
Just remember, how you organize your closet is a personal decision that should make the most sense to YOU. There's no "right" or "wrong" way to do it!
I fold my sweaters (and all of my folded clothing) per the Kon Mari Method. You can watch a video demonstrating here. SIDE NOTE - Marie Kondo, the creator of this method, is a little crazy, which you know if you've read her book. The book does have some good tips on folding and storing items, and it's also quite entertaining to hear her talk about how our clothes have feelings (yep, I'm serious). Once I have all of my sweaters folded, I stack them on shelves so that they can all be seen at a glance. I don't like putting things in drawers if I can help it because you can't see everything in the drawer at a glance, and inevitably, things get "lost" at the bottom. And that's it! Are you feeling more organized just reading this?!

Day 2 of the Closet Cleanout Challenge - DRESSES, SKIRTS, & HANDBAGS
Welcome to Day 2 of the 7 Day Closet Cleanout Challenge! If you missed the post that explains what the challenge is and how to
get entered into the giveaway that's taking place at the end of the
week, go back and read it HERE. If you missed Day 1, which was SHOES, go back and read it HERE. Now, without further ado, let's get into our task for Day 2 - cleaning out our dresses, skirts, and handbags! Remember, each task is meant to take around 30 minutes, so if you're getting overwhelmed or have a large number of items to go through, you can always break this step into multiple days. I'm not much of a dress wearer, so I can get through all of my dresses, skirts, and handbags in 30 minutes.
WHAT TO KEEP VS. WHAT GET RID OF
The
whole point of this challenge is to declutter our closets (and thus,
our lives) so that we can spend less time digging for items, as well as
have a beautiful space filled with items we truly love. The first step is to pull all of these items out of your closet, or at the bare minimum, move them all into one central area of your closet where you can see them all. We're
going to categorize all of our dresses, skirts, and handbags into three categories: KEEP, SELL, OR DONATE. Take a
hard look at each item and ask yourself these questions:
- Would I buy this if I saw it in the store today?
- Have I worn it/carried it in the past year?
- Is it still in good shape?
If
you answered "yes" to all three questions, put it in the KEEP pile.
If not, it's time to get rid of it. For the ones you're getting rid of, if they're
in good shape, put them in the SELL pile. If not, they go in the
DONATE pile. Formal dresses and expensive handbags are the exception to the rule here. If you truly plan to utilize them in the future, but just haven't had the right occasion in the past year, you can keep them. However, if next year rolls around and you STILL haven't used them, it's time to let them go!
For the SELL pile, you can either sell
these in a garage sale, on Craigslist, to a local consignment store, or
to my personal favorite, ThredUp.
You could even get creative and have a clothing swap party with your friends! ThredUp is my personal favorite because it's so easy. You just request a free clean out bag from their website, fill it with
your name brand clothing that's in good condition, and mail it back
(free of charge). They will pay you for the clothes they keep and
decide to resell. For your DONATE pile, bag it up and take it to the charity
or shelter of your choice. If donating to a charity, make sure to ask
for a receipt so you can deduct it on your taxes. You can find some
guidelines for how to value your used clothing here.
HOW TO STORE DRESSES & SKIRTS
Dresses and skirts should be hung. The most aesthetically pleasing way to hang them is in order from shortest to longest. If you have a large amount, you may even choose to sub-categorize by season. I hang everything in my closet on these hangers because in addition to being very slim and space saving, having all of your hangers match makes everything look so much more organized and uniform. I prefer to use skirt hangers like these for my skirts
HOW TO STORE HANDBAGS
Handbags are best stored on a shelf, as opposed to hung, to prevent any wear and tear on the strap. I like to sit my larger bags lined up on a shelf in my closet, while I store my smaller clutches away in a decorative box like this.
Here are even more options to help get your creative juices flowing. Just remember that in addition to having your storage LOOK amazing, you also want everything to be functional, easy to access, and easy to see at a glance (think see through bins)!

Day 1 of the Closet Cleanout Challenge - SHOES
Today is Day 1 of our 7 Day Closet Cleanout Challenge! Who's ready?!
If you missed the post that explains what the challenge is and how to
get entered into the giveaway that's taking place at the end of the
week, go back and read it HERE. The first section of our closet that
we're tackling are our shoes. Don't forget to show us your progress on Instagram and Facebook using the hashtag #7DayClosetCleanoutChallenge!
WHAT TO KEEP VS. WHAT GET RID OF
The whole point of this challenge is to declutter our closets (and thus, our lives) so that we can spend less time digging for items, as well as have a beautiful space filled with items we truly love. The first step is to take ALL of your shoes out of your closet. Don't forget any stragglers that might be sitting in the garage or hall closet. We're going to categorize all of our shoes (and by the end of the week, all of our clothing) into three categories: KEEP, SELL, OR DONATE. Take a hard look at each pair of shoes and ask yourself these questions:
- Would I buy these if I saw them in the store today?
- Have I worn them in the past year?
- Are they still in good shape?
If you answered "yes" to all three questions, put them in the KEEP pile. If not, get rid of them. For the ones you're getting rid of, if they're in good shape, put them in the SELL pile. If not, they go in the DONATE pile. The only exception is for sentimental pieces (think wedding shoes) or formal shoes that you haven't worn in the past year but you'd still like to keep for special occasions.
For the SELL pile, you can either sell these in a garage sale, on Craigslist, to a local consignment store, or to my personal favorite, ThredUp. You just request a free clean out bag from their website, fill it with your name brand clothing that's in good condition, and mail it back (free of charge)! They will pay you for the clothes they keep and decide to resell. I find this to be the easiest method since I don't have to actually do anything other than throw it in a bag and drop it in the mail. For your DONATE pile, bag it up and take it to the charity or shelter of your choice. If donating to a charity, make sure to ask for a receipt so you can deduct it on your taxes. You can find some guidelines for how to value your used clothing here.
HOW TO STORE SHOES
For the shoes you're keeping, you'll want to put them back in your closet in an organized fashion. Much of this depends on personal preference. If you have a small closet, you may choose to only put out shoes for the current season and put the rest in temporary storage. I personally like to keep all of my shoes in clear stackable storage boxes like these to keep the dust off of them. Here are some great options if you're in need of a shoe organizer! And once you get those shoes back in the closet, don't forget to snap a picture and post to FB or Instagram with the hashtag #7DayClosetCleanoutChallenge! Using the hashtag gets you entered into a drawing to win a Target gift card!

7 Day Closet Cleanout Challenge!
Spring is finally here, and with it, spring cleaning! While I don't
enjoy scrubbing and dusting, I DO enjoy purging and organizing. About
twice a year, I purge my closet and drawers of unwanted items. While
it's very satisfying once it's complete, it's a pretty daunting task
that can be hard to get motivated for. This week, I'm inviting you to
join me for the Nineteen Windsor 7 Day Closet Cleanout Challenge!
WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU?
As we go through the week, I'm inviting everyone to post their pictures to Facebook and Instagram with the hashtag #7DayClosetCleanoutChallenge. It will be fun to see everyone's progress and will help hold us all accountable for completing the entire week. And if the prospect of a clean and organized closet doesn't entice you, I'll be randomly drawing a winner at the end of the week for a $25 Target gift card! Whether you choose to use the gift card to begin to reclutter your closet or buy storage cubes, the choice is yours! Just remember, you have to use the hashtag #7DayClosetCleanoutChallenge to be entered to win! I'll also be choosing a reader's photo each day and sharing it on the NW Facebook page!
HOW DOES THE CHALLENGE WORK?
Each day for 7 days, we'll tackle a specific task that takes 30 MINUTES OR LESS, such as cleaning out our sweaters, coats, or shoes. At the end of the week, we'll all have a beautifully organized closet, filled only with the items we LOVE to wear. Each day, I'll walk you through the guidelines on knowing what to keep vs. what to get rid of, and what your options are for getting rid of the unwanted items, be it donation or consignment. We'll also discuss the best way to organize and store the items we're keeping, including the best way to fold or hang specific items, as well as the best organizers and storage boxes to keep everything in it's place.
WHO'S WITH ME?!
Make sure you're following Nineteen Windsor on Facebook and Instagram so you don't miss a day. I'll be posting reminders to both places, as well as posting all of the guidelines and instructions on the blog. I'll see you back here tomorrow for Day 1 of the 7 Day Closet Cleanout Challenge!
